Lao PDR joining REDD+

………………………………………

When did Lao PDR join REDD+?

Since 2005, work on REDD+ envisaged under the UNFCCC is being supported by multilateral and bilateral donors, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. Three large multilateral efforts – the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), the Forest Investment Program (FIP), and the United Nations Program on REDD+ (UN-REDD) – have been prominent in assisting various countries to develop their REDD+ programs.

Lao PDR joined the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) in 2008, the year that the FCPF was established. It received funding from the FCPF’s Readiness Fund to prepare a REDD+ Readiness Proposal in 2010, which has subsequently been accepted. A Readiness Grant was awarded to Lao PDR in 2014, and is now under implementation.

In 2011, Lao PDR prepared the Lao Forest Investment Plan, which was accepted by the Forest Investment Program in January 2012. It provides partial funding for REDD+-related activities in three forestry projects.

In 2012, Lao PDR joined the UN-REDD Program as a partner country.

In 2015, Lao PDR was accepted into the project pipeline for a possible Emissions Reduction Program to under the FCPF Carbon Fund.

Meanwhile, a number of other REDD+ pilot projects and initiatives got underway in Lao PDR, beginning in 2009.   Most of these activities are contributing to building capacity and developing REDD+ Readiness (Phase 1), although some are also contributing to pilots and demonstrations (Phase 2). The work on REL and MRV, is being done with support from several development partners.
